Consoles And Gaming Increase In Popularity Due To The COVID-19 Pandemic

Updated: Apr 21, 2020

Games have become increasingly popular after coronavirus causes many to stay indoors and social distance to battle the pandemic.

As Prime Minister: Boris Johnson has encouraged members of the public to stay at home for their safety many families have decided to buy new consoles for their children or themselves to play.

One of these consoles which are being brought by many in the UK currently is the Nintendo Switch, a product released by Nintendo in March 2017.

However, as of today (Monday 31st March) families are unable to buy this product across the nation from any online store as many shops such as Argos or Currys have run out of stock.

This has left many to question why this is the case and if they shall be returning to stores soon.

Currently on the Nintendo website when searching for the console a message has been posted that reads: “We’re working hard to re-stock products as quickly as possible”

However no further information has been given on an exact date.

On the Argos website viewings of the product had increased from the week starting 23rd March as over 100 customers viewed the switch every minute hoping to make a purchase.

This spike in video games popularity has not only been seen with switches in the UK but also Xbox in the United States.

Data provided by SimilarWeb revealed that Xbox’s site surged on both March 12th and further on March 15th with over one million sign-ins causing the Xbox Live servers to go down due to the amount of ‘requests’ they were having.

This may be due to how much safer it is to interact with people through video games as you can still be in contact with your friends while social distancing.

Gaming companies are also getting involved during this pandemic by releasing free weekends of certain games this has led to many friends being able to interact and stay entertained during lockdown, gamers hope that this kindness will continue during the rest of the UK lockdown.
