Now with around 1,436 reported cases of patients infected with COVID-19 and 55 deaths presented by Worldometer Prime Minister; Boris Johnson has begun daily updates concerning the pandemic.

During the first live update (Monday 16th March) Boris Johnson discussed the precautions he wishes for members of the public to take in order to prevent further cases.

He told members of the discussion that “cases could double in the next five to six days” if drastic action is not taken.

The Prime Minister urged those that believe they may have the virus or believe members of their household could then they should self-isolate themselves for 14 days and reduce social interaction as much as they can.

“We need people to start working from home where they possibly can, and you should avoid pubs, clubs, theatres and other social venues.” – Boris Johnson; UK Prime Minister

However, with this news, many members of the public went to Twitter to speak up on the decision to not close schools as many saw this as another social situation which could cause COVID-19 to spread.

This message was repeated by many on Twitter as the phrase ‘CLOSE THE SCHOOLS’ began to trend in the UK with others sharing their concerns and urging for Boris Johnson to make the necessary changes.

But what about Key workers?

As of the 15th April Schools are now closed for most of the UK however, children of key workers are still able to go to school in the mornings to allow their parents to complete the crucial work needed during this pandemic.

One of these key workers is a civil servant that works for the Department for Work and Pensions spoke to me concerning the importance of allowing their child to still go to school.

“If the schools closed completely there would be no childcare open to look after key workers children, this would mean that at this critical time myself and my colleagues wouldn’t be able to go to work to help vulnerable people…”

This civil servant told me of the importance of their job as they said how during this pandemic their role was vital in order to make sure they were ‘open so families, individuals and children don’t suffer financially in times of need.’

With the Easter holiday almost over Schools remain closed until further notice as the public waits eagerly for an announcement from the government for when these precautions will be relaxed.
